Respec economics: what a full reset actually costs in Runes

Published · skill data as of 2026-10-26 · sources & flags

Respec in Enshrouded 1.0 is cheap to explain and expensive to improvise: a Flame Altar resets your entire tree for 1 Rune per spent skill point. That single rule prices every question this article answers — what a typical build costs to redo, why the fee structure changed during Early Access, and how to spend zero Runes finding out your new tree before you commit. The full mechanics live on the respec guide; this piece is the arithmetic.

The rule, and where it comes from

The Enshrouded wiki's Flame Altar page states it plainly: the altar "allows players to reset their skill tree at a cost of 1 Runes per spent skill point" (CC BY-SA 4.0). Three properties of the rule matter more than the rate itself:

  • It is per point, not per skill. A five-rank skill being refunded costs five points' worth of Runes, not one.
  • It is all-at-once. There is no single-skill refund in game — the altar resets the whole tree or nothing. The community has asked for one-by-one respec as a quality-of-life feature, which is itself confirmation that all-at-once is the current system.
  • It prices your mistakes linearly. Twice the spent points, twice the Runes — there is no bulk discount and no escalating penalty.

One historical footnote the older guides get wrong: early in Early Access the reset was a flat 10-Rune fee. Pricing changed to per-point during Early Access, so any guide quoting 10 Runes as the current cost is describing a system that no longer exists.

What a reset costs, priced with real builds

Because the cost is 1:1 with spent points, our build guides' published totals are literally their respec prices:

BuildSpent pointsFull reset costs
Radiant Healer3030 Runes
Fire Battlemage3232 Runes
Two-Handed Barbarian3939 Runes
Summoner Necromancer4848 Runes
Poison Dagger Assassin5252 Runes
Crit Bow Ranger6060 Runes
Frost Control Mage6161 Runes
One-Handed Warden6767 Runes

A mid-sized 40–60 point build costs 40–60 Runes — the respec guide's rule of thumb, and the numbers above sit right on it. At the ceiling, a character who spent the full 212-point budget pays 212 Runes to start over, which is why the game gives you every reason to plan before you spend rather than after.

Two resets you didn't have to pay for

Every long-term player has already been handed two free — and mandatory — full respecs. Update 8 — Forging the Path (April 21, 2026) rebuilt the tree — more than 20 new nodes, more than 80 skills became upgradable with ranks, Double Jump moved to the center — and reset everyone; then 1.0 (October 15, 2026) did it again on first load. The 1.0 changelog says it in Keen Games' own words: "When playing for the first time in version 1.0.0.0 with an existing save game, the skill tree will be reset. Please make sure to spend the skill points again!"

Those forced resets cost no Runes — they were version transitions, not altar visits. But they explain why the whole community re-planned at once in October 2026, and why dated pre-1.0 build guides quietly break: the trees they describe no longer exist. If you are rebuilding after either reset, the 1.0 change list tracks every skill's fate — new, moved or carried.

Lifetime cost, and why maxed trees pay the most

Because the rate is linear, total respec spend is just points × resets. A 52-point build reset three times over a patch cycle is 156 Runes; a 67-point tank reset just once costs more than the assassin's first reset and less than its second. The pricing quietly argues for the same conclusion the point budget does: spend deliberately the first time, because in Enshrouded you either pay Runes to change your mind or pay attention before you spend.

The reset itself is mechanical: every rank of every skill goes back into your pool — attribute pips and all — and you re-buy from the free ✦ Sparks outward. Nothing is lost except the Runes and the time it takes to re-spend well; saved planner links survive resets, since they store allocations, not characters.

The zero-Rune respec

Nothing in the 1-Rune rule penalizes planning. In the skill tree planner, right-clicking any node refunds its ranks instantly and for free, the allocation saves locally in your browser, and the share link carries the whole build — re-spend it there until the tree is right, then pay the altar once with confidence. The expensive respec is the one you do twice; rehearsed once, it is a single 30–67 Rune transaction for most builds.

Runes themselves drop from defeated enemies, so normal play banks enough for occasional resets — the cost only stings if you re-roll a maxed tree daily. Cost rule, history and sources are all on the respec guide; if the pricing ever changes again, that page moves with it.
